Depression in children and young adults

Depression is a problem for many adults and statistics show that there is a large number of the population who have mild depression and subthreshold depressive symptoms but they don't seek medical treatment and it passes without knowing. In children, the situation might be more difficult because children don't know what is depression and they express their feelings in other ways.

Parents should know the signs of depression in children in order to be able to catch depression whenever it affects their children. It needs caring and loving parents who are also able to make a dialogue with their children and share ideas, feelings and encourage their kids to tell their problems without fear of misunderstanding or over-controlling behaviour from their parents. It is important to seek professional advice when depression is suspected in children, the sooner, the better.
